Background of the Study

Tourism is a significant contributor to economic development, fostering cultural exchange, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings. However, its growth is heavily dependent on safety and security, as tourists tend to avoid destinations perceived as unsafe. Borno State, located in northeastern Nigeria, is rich in cultural heritage and natural attractions. Historically, the state attracted domestic and international tourists to sites like the Sambisa Game Reserve and the ancient city of Bama.

However, over the past decade, the rise of terrorist activities, particularly by Boko Haram, has severely impacted the tourism industry in Borno State. Frequent attacks, kidnappings, and destruction of infrastructure have tarnished the state's image as a tourism destination. This has resulted in dwindling tourist arrivals, loss of revenue, and the closure of many tourism-dependent businesses. This study aims to investigate the effect of terrorism on Nigeria's tourism industry in Borno State, examining its impact on visitor numbers, local livelihoods, and economic development.

Statement of the Problem

The tourism industry in Borno State has experienced a sharp decline due to terrorism, resulting in significant economic losses and unemployment. Despite the state's potential as a tourism destination, ongoing insecurity deters tourists, investors, and stakeholders. The lack of comprehensive studies on the specific impacts of terrorism on tourism in Borno State limits the ability to develop effective mitigation strategies. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring the extent to which terrorism has affected tourism in the state and identifying potential pathways for recovery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of terrorism on tourist arrivals in Borno State.

  2. To examine the economic consequences of terrorism on the tourism industry in Borno State.

  3. To propose strategies for mitigating the effects of terrorism on tourism in Borno State.

Research Questions

  1. How has terrorism affected tourist arrivals in Borno State?

  2. What are the economic impacts of terrorism on the tourism industry in Borno State?

  3. What strategies can be employed to mitigate the effects of terrorism on tourism in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Terrorism has a significant negative impact on tourist arrivals in Borno State.

  2. The economic performance of the tourism industry in Borno State is adversely affected by terrorism.

  3. Implementing security-focused strategies will mitigate the effects of terrorism on tourism in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the tourism industry in Borno State, assessing the effects of terrorism on tourist arrivals, local businesses, and overall revenue. It also explores recovery strategies implemented by stakeholders. Limitations include restricted access to data due to security concerns and the possibility of bias in responses from affected stakeholders.
